The first time I was introduced to this book was my Senior Year of high school in English class. I remember it being one of the assigned books that I actually liked and wanted to read. This is a tale of a young man going on a self-spiritual journey into the Alaskan Wilderness - very Thoreau, no? I feel this book is worthy of my first post because it is one of the earliest books that I can remember having a profound impact on how I wanted to shape my life.
What I liked most about this book, other than the way Jon Krakauer beautifully crafts Chris McCandless' (aka Alexander Supertramp) story to unfold and tell itself, is the fact that this book is not just another adventure book - it is a story of the realization and the intricate entanglement of individual journey and societal pressures. You are forced to realize the wonderful balance that rests delicately between the two juxtapositions of self and society.
Just over 200 pages long, this book is a fairly quick read - and if you are as captivated by the story as I was, you may just find yourself reaching for it time and time again!
